Wastewater Assessment and Biochemical Oxygen Demand Value Prediction from Mining Operations: A Case Study

Wastewater is a byproduct of industrial or household waste processes, and its contamination level must be determined before treatment. Discharges liquid effluents generated by mining operations, one the most prevalent forms water, pose risk to human health environment. This study evaluates physicochemical quality effluent discharges from Boukhadra mine (Algeria). Samples were collected washing water identify these measure parameters such as temperature (T), hydrogen potential (pH), Electrical Conductivity (EC), Suspended Solids (SS), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Biological for 5 days (BOD5), Oils Greases (O&G), iron (Fe+2) Kjeldahl Nitrogen (NTK). It was found that concentration values those exceeded maximum limits specified international standards. A simple reliable prediction model developed estimate DBO5, based on MES, COD, O&G, using classical regression analysis fitting Design Experiments (DOE) methodology. When comparing analytical results, it quadratic provided better estimation, with high correlation coefficient (R2) 0.9976. The in this will enable engineers quickly degree wastewater choose adequate treatment strategies.
